Happy Christma-Hanu-Rama-Ka-Dona-Kwanzaa!

I don’t really have a Christmas or New Year or related holiday comic, but in any case, I hope you have a great time! I plan to eat until I pass out, as is tradition. To get the party started, I’ll leave you with the wise words of the great Roy Zimmerman.

Cheers!

And in case you haven’t yet, you can still get your
free holiday cards.

Redesign

Beardfluff v.2.0 has just gone live and I hope it is to you liking. Most radical change is the structure of the homepage. I really wanted this site to be about more then just showing a comic and be done with it. Of course comics are still the focal point of Beardfluff but it’s also the place where I put my sketches and illustrations. So those two got their own little window, along with the news so you can instantly see what’s going on. Below that, a variety of links related to the comic (category navigation, contact and social media stuff, commercial links). For example, there’s now a handy little tab to direct you to the TNP Chatroom where you can ask questions or just sociallize with the artists.

For structure and concept, I took a bit of inspiration from various other webcomics, like Dresden Codak who in my opinion has one of the best designed webcomic sites right now. I may not be the most stunning visually, but everything you need in on there in a clear and approachable way and what you don’t need is disposed off. Best of all, it stays clear of that out-of-the-box ComicPress look that 90% of webcomics have. No offense towards Comicpress – they did a great job making it easy for creators to put up a webcomics – but I’m sick of the uniformity. Most people will change the colors and add a few illustrations but they won’t have an overall concept for the site. More often than not, it’s a question of webdesign skill of course. I don’t expect every artist to be a designer and developer. And I have my tastes as well. I’ve got a thing for the practical and ‘less’ mentality when it comes to sites.
Some other nice examples: PvP Online, Pajama Forest and Octopus Pie

The design stays close to the previous version (colors and some visual elements) but also refers to my other site, PaperblackNinja which focuses more on design and acts as my professional portfolio. I felt that since these are 2 aspects of myself that are closely related anyway, I might as well show it in the design as well.

No doubt I’ll be cursing at this redesign by this time next week, since I’m never happy with anything that comes out of these hands, but for now I’m satisfied with what I’ve made. Let me know if anything’s broken because their might still be a couple of bugs and oversights. And if you’re watching this on IE6, you’re trying too hard.

Cheers!

Movember and fan art

The month is almost over and I still haven’t talked about Movember, shame on me. So, next comic will be dedicated to that. What the heck is Movember, you ask? In short: it’s all about growing a moustache during November, to help raise money for prostate cancer awareness. Check out the previous link for more info, and check out awesome cartoonist Ryan’s moustache to see a fine example.

In extra extra special news: my good buddy and TNP collegue Joenis made Beardfluff fan art! It’s fantastic and you should all bookmark his site. There, I said it, no taking it back now!

Holiday cards

The season for giving and feeling sorry for ourselves is almost upon us. That’s why I made a couple of alternative Holiday Cards. They are free for you to give to unsuspecting friends and enemies alike. They come in a handy .pdf (for printing) and .png (to send online).
If you saw the Valentine’s Day cards I made, you know what to expect.
Enjoy!

Brush drawings

I’ve had some fun drawing with my old Pentel brush pen lately. Just added a couple of drawings to the sketchbook section. The girl with the mallet is Ramona Flowers, from Brian Lee O’Malley’s “Scott Pilgrim” and the screaming dude comes from Dragonball Z.

New store

Hello folks. As you’ve no doubt noticed, the store has been offline for quite a while (mainly because of server issues). But those dark days are over, my friends! Following the trend of other comickers (comicers?) out there, I’ve set up shop over at Bigcartel. (link in the left sidebar, just click the Shop image)
So far, it’s just the button packs in the products list, but there’s more to come. See you in the store!

Advertising on Beardfluff.com

Because of the recent move of the comic, I decided to set up new adboxes. I removed 1 skyscraper in favour of a square and some buttons. That way I save some space and give some more options. With any luck, these ads will pay for the hosting. So if someone’s interested in running ads, be sure to click the PW link under the adbox of your choice.
Thanks, and happy bidding!

Moving to Beardfluff

I present to you: a new design and a new name. The comic has officially moved and I hope to keep the new name for a while. So don’t forget to update your bookmarks and RSS subscription!
I chose Beardfluff because it sounds fun and lighthearted to me. If there’s one thing I try to do here, it’s not taking myself too seriously. Of course, there’s still room for that blackened, sarcastic and cynical part of my soul in here. That’s what makes this all the more fun.
Besides the comics, this’ll be the place where I put my other drawings and various craft-related things. It’s still a bit empty on that front, and you might encounter some bugs while I’m still cleaning up the place.
Feel free to comment on the changes and share your opinion on the new site!

Calling guest artists

Oh, I know what you’re thinking: “Didn’t you just get fired? You must have plenty of time!” “And don’t you make a weekly comic anyway? That’s 7 days to finish 6 panels, you lazy bastard!”

Hey now! That’s very insensitive of you! I’m in a fragile state right now and I might start crying! Alas, I’m not leaving The Job until October and I’m in the middle of other exciting creative things at the moment! Including packing to move to another apartment soon.

So some guestcomics or pinups would really come in handy. You can post a reply and I’ll give you my e-mail address if you’re interested.
I’d like to have a first piece to post by Tuesday, August 4th –So close by, I’m very sorry– but you can keep sending stuff in until August 25th to have the month covered.
Internet fame awaits you, don’t be shy!

Updates

An overview of what’s been going on lately. Some I already mentioned in passing when updating comics, but really it makes more sense to group it into a post.

  • As you all know, I’m sure, we’ve got an awesome forum at TNP Press where you can share your thoughts on everything from antlers to zootropes (link in the navigation bar). And now every comic got it’s own special forum. Including My Chronic Insomnia! Go forth and post thy twisted thoughts and share opinions with likeminded individuals!
  • If you’re on Facebook (like all the cool kids and the hip elderly), become a fan of the MCI Fanpage.
On twitter, you can now follow @mci_comics for news and updates on the comic.
  • I’m working on a whole new website and online identity. Not just the comic site, but my whole portfolio will get a make-over this summer. I want it to be more profesional, memorable and creative than ‘mindbase21’. Especially for new people to come visit and explore.
  • Lastly, the obligatory sales-pitch (it pays for my hosting): get your awesome buttons in the shop. 5 buttons for $7, that includes shipping.
