I just upgraded to Webcomic plugin version 3, and html5. If that just sounds like gibberish to you, don’t worry about it. It just means I did some cleaning around the site and i might still be a little buggy. It’s just cosmetic stuff so navigating the site shouldn’t give you too much trouble.
If you run into problems or the comic isn’t showing, just mail me (link in the sidebar) and I’ll be right on it.

Cut-out beards

You might have seen me mention this on Tumblr or Facebook but I made some cut-out beards. You can download & print them yourselves until next Sunday, after which I’ll hopefully have prints ready for the store. Check it out, they’ll be the hottest fashion item of the year!

Mini comics

You might recall that I was composing a mini comic a while back. Well, I finally got around to finalizing the design and actually get some printed. 32 pages in black and white, with a full-color cover, cut and stapled at home (trying to keep it low-budget). You can get one with a custom sketch in it if you want.

Between the waves

A while back I was contacted by Knut of the Eardrums Music blog and Eardrums Pop (the label). He was looking for people to contribute comics for the booklet of a new music collection. After a long wait, Between the Waves is finally out for everyone to download and enjoy (for free!). It comes in 3 parts and the booklet is included with part A:

Between the waves features a comic about ‘The Greatest Beard’ and it turns out Philippa Rice of My Cardboard Life also made one. The whole book is bloody brilliant, from design to content really. Plenty of info on all the bands/musicians and even poetry. So be sure to check it out.

Okay, so it’s about time we had a Fanpage for Beardfluff that was actually called ‘Beardfluff I think. And what better time to make one, then the present. I’ve also taken the opportunity to clean up the site somewhat and add a new logo/icon in the header. Let me know what you think about it.

So here’s the deal:
- become a fan of the Page before April 14th 2010 and comment or ‘like’ the first post. (There’s only 1 post so it’s really easy)
- On Wednesday the 14th, I will pick 3 people at random who will receive 1) a set of 5 buttons and 2) a drawing of a most amazing beard.

Open call for guest comics and art

I recently made the call on Twitter, but I’ll say it here again. In April, I’d like to take a bit of time off, so I could use some guest art to fill the blanks in my update schedule.
The only requirement is that the comics or art should be a maximum of 800px wide. It can be less if you want. Of course I’ll be crediting & linking you in the post. If you need a guestcomic from me in the future, I’ll be happy to help.
Submissions are open from now until the end of April. You can contact me via Twitter or mail me.

Redesign

Beardfluff v.2.0 has just gone live and I hope it is to you liking. Most radical change is the structure of the homepage. I really wanted this site to be about more then just showing a comic and be done with it. Of course comics are still the focal point of Beardfluff but it’s also the place where I put my sketches and illustrations. So those two got their own little window, along with the news so you can instantly see what’s going on. Below that, a variety of links related to the comic (category navigation, contact and social media stuff, commercial links). For example, there’s now a handy little tab to direct you to the TNP Chatroom where you can ask questions or just sociallize with the artists.

For structure and concept, I took a bit of inspiration from various other webcomics, like Dresden Codak who in my opinion has one of the best designed webcomic sites right now. I may not be the most stunning visually, but everything you need in on there in a clear and approachable way and what you don’t need is disposed off. Best of all, it stays clear of that out-of-the-box ComicPress look that 90% of webcomics have. No offense towards Comicpress – they did a great job making it easy for creators to put up a webcomics – but I’m sick of the uniformity. Most people will change the colors and add a few illustrations but they won’t have an overall concept for the site. More often than not, it’s a question of webdesign skill of course. I don’t expect every artist to be a designer and developer. And I have my tastes as well. I’ve got a thing for the practical and ‘less’ mentality when it comes to sites.
Some other nice examples: PvP Online, Pajama Forest and Octopus Pie

The design stays close to the previous version (colors and some visual elements) but also refers to my other site, PaperblackNinja which focuses more on design and acts as my professional portfolio. I felt that since these are 2 aspects of myself that are closely related anyway, I might as well show it in the design as well.

No doubt I’ll be cursing at this redesign by this time next week, since I’m never happy with anything that comes out of these hands, but for now I’m satisfied with what I’ve made. Let me know if anything’s broken because their might still be a couple of bugs and oversights. And if you’re watching this on IE6, you’re trying too hard.

Movember and fan art

The month is almost over and I still haven’t talked about Movember, shame on me. So, next comic will be dedicated to that. What the heck is Movember, you ask? In short: it’s all about growing a moustache during November, to help raise money for prostate cancer awareness. Check out the previous link for more info, and check out awesome cartoonist Ryan’s moustache to see a fine example.

In extra extra special news: my good buddy and TNP collegue Joenis made Beardfluff fan art! It’s fantastic and you should all bookmark his site. There, I said it, no taking it back now!

Holiday cards

Brush drawings

I’ve had some fun drawing with my old Pentel brush pen lately. Just added a couple of drawings to the sketchbook section. The girl with the mallet is Ramona Flowers, from Brian Lee O’Malley’s “Scott Pilgrim” and the screaming dude comes from Dragonball Z.
